- Brides used to symbolize their happiness while getting married by wearing bright, cheerful colors in their wedding dress, instead of today's traditional white hue.
- In mideval times, the wedding wasn't just two peopling vowing to share the rest of their lives together. It was also a joint between two families, countries, or businesses. Thus, brides had to dress appropriatley as they were representing more than just themselves.
- In weddings, wealth and status was shown through expensive fabrics. That is similar to present day dresses, but in past weddings flamboyant and rich colors showed status as well.
- During World War 2, brides that were effected on the home front by the war thought it was inappropriate to have a lavish wedding and expensive dress while the country was at war. Instead, they choose a simple dress that was suitable for church in order to save money.
- After the war, the white wedding dress evolved. It was seen inappropriate to sport any color besides any hue of white, as weddings were seen as more formal. It is unclear why the white wedding dress surged after the war, but many people think that weddings were seen as more important and formal.
- According to legend, it is bad luck to get married in a black wedding dress.
Wedding Dresses
I choose to research the history of wedding dresses for many reasons. First, as wedding dresses are a source of amazement for me, I thought it would be fun to find out the history of them and understand more about their importance. Wedding dresses are a very important part to the most important day of some people's lives, and I want to further investigate their significance. Wedding dresses have been, and probably always will be, beautiful and special to every girl's wedding.

Wedding dresses: Waaaay back when
Marriage, despite the times, has always been a symbolic union between two people. Weddings have been celebrated forever, and probably always wil be. Here are some facts about weddings in the olden days:
Here comes the bride.... The best Wedding Dresses in History
As established in my last post, wedding dresses have been prominent in weddings for a very long time. Wedding dresses have always been a centerpiece in weddings. Here are a few, but most certainly not all, influential and gorgeous wedding dresses that have been worn by important women throughout history.
1. Queen Victoria to Prince Albert
Queen Victoria is largely credited to starting the trend of the white wedding dress. Her dress started a wave of trends, all being white and fairly modest.
2. Grace Kelly to the Prince of Monaco

The American Grace Kelly married The Prince of Monaco in 1956. She married him in a lace dress with long sleeves--inspiring people across the world. Her dress also served as an inspiration for princess bride Kate Middleton.

Jackie Kennedy's dress, made by African-American designer Ann Lowe, is a ivory-silk-taffeta dress. This dress was new and different to the times and cause a wave of similar dresses.
4. Princess Diana
Princess Diana's iconic wedding dress was as over the top as her elaborate wedding. It had a 25-foot train, big, puffy sleeves, and a classic princess ballgown. Princess Diana's dress is now valued as priceless.
Kate's dress was designed by Sara Burton for Alexander McQueen. As it was inspired by Grace Kelly's bridal gown, Kate's dress has long lace sleeves and hand-embroidered dress with a 6 foot skirt. Already thousands of copies have been made around the world, as Kate's dress serves as a huge inspiration for brides across the world.
